Wellesley BlueJazz provides students with the opportunity to develop and nurture their love of jazz—one of the most vibrant American contemporary art forms. Circular Association is a collaboration of Argentinean, American and Mexican jazz musicians. It all started in 2009, with the recording of Pedro Cervera’s CD “Circular” in California with Sabino Paz, Mario Cerra and jazz masters Peter Sprague and Bob Magnuson. This group has been performing extensively since then in California, Boston, Mexico and Argentina.

The Marlene Jazz Ensemble will be performing a lively repertoire that mixes jazz, latin, originals and re-arrangements of Marlene's favorite pop tunes. Berklee students write and produce an original musical each year honoring an American music icon. This year's musical tells the story of the life and work of B.B. King. The show will feature two special guest performers -- Grammy-nominated vocalist Nona Hendryx (Labelle, solo) and Grammy-winning guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Colour) -- and the musical talents of more than 20 Berklee students.

B.B. King: Why I Sing the Blues takes place on Saturday, April 30, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 1, at 3:00 p.m. in the Berklee Performance Center (BPC), 136 Massachusetts Avenue, in Boston. The musical traces King's life from his humble beginnings in the Mississippi Delta to his place as an internationally beloved entertainer and icon of blues music. The show will feature some of his most popular songs, such as "Sweet Sixteen," "Rock Me Baby," "Why I Sing the Blues," and "The Thrill is Gone." Grammy-nominated drummer Terri Lyne Carrington will serve as ensemble director. The musical is directed by Associate Professor Rebecca Perricone, and produced by Associate Professor Amy Merrill.

Nona Hendryx is an ambassador of artistry in education at Berklee. She performed at the 2010 Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival, and Skin Diver, her futuristic rock opera, was recently workshopped by Berklee students. From her beginnings with LaBelle, followed by a stunning solo career, and then an induction into the Rhythm & Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1999, Hendryx has always been on the cutting edge of music. With Labelle, she racked up three gold albums and a No. 1 worldwide hit with "Lady Marmalade (Voulez-Vous Coucher Avec Moi Ce Soir?)." Recently, Hendryx toured festivals in Europe with the Daughters of Soul (Sandra St. Victor, Indira Khan, Lisa Simone, Lalah Hathaway, and Joyce Kennedy), toured in the U.S with Cyndi Lauper on the True Colors tour, and reunited with Patti Labelle for a 2008-2009 tour.

Vernon Reid is best known for his lightning-fast guitar solos, leading the pioneering multi-platinum rock band Living Colour, and founding the Black Rock Coalition, a collective promoting the creative freedom and development of black rock musicians. Born in London, Reid and his family emigrated to Brooklyn while he was a child. He began playing guitar at 15, initially studying jazz and progressing quickly. In 1980, he joined drummer Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, a cutting-edge jazz group with whom he appeared on six albums. Over the course of the decade, Reid went on to work with a wide variety of experimental musicians -- Defunkt, Bill Frisell, John Zorn, Arto Lindsay, and Public Enemy, among others.

Opening the night, the Brad Barrett and Laura Grill Duo features original music and cover tunes creatively arranged for the unique instrumentation of acoustic bass and voice. Graduates of New England Conservatory, Brad Barrett and Laura Grill display outstanding musicianship in their creative improvisation and composition skills. The second group features Kelly Sciandra (Reign of Kindo) and ZUMIX percussion instructor Ben Paulding. Playing all original music, the group plays contemporary jazz inspired by Vijay Iyer, Brad Mehldau, and the Bad Plus.

The Aardvark Jazz Orchestra celebrates Duke Ellington's birthday [April 29} with a program of standards, rarities, and s_elections from the Second Sacred Concert, performed in 1969 at Emmanuel Church. Vocal soloists include Dominique Eade, Grace Hughers, and Jerry Edwards. Concert is part of Jazz Week and of the Emmanuel Church's
150th Anniversary.

It has been a decade since the Kenny Hadley Big Band played a concert of Duke Ellington Music to a sellout audience at the United Church of Christ in Abington.

On Sunday, May 1st at 3 pm, the Big Band will be returning to the church to play a "Celebration Concert" to mark the 300th Anniversary of the founding of the church. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the concert and parishioners of the U.C.C. in Abington invite members of the community to join them in this memorable musical event.

This year the Kenny Hadley Big Band will perform a few excerpts from the Sacred Concerts of Duke Ellington but will primarily feature a variety of big band jazz favorites. The 16 members of the band are some of New England's premier musicians who have played and toured with many nationally known artists such as Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Count Basie, and Buddy Rich. Conducting the band will be Dick Lowell who has composed an original piece entitled: "RBJ". The piece is dedicated to Brockton's extraordinary musician Dick Johnson, who passed away last year. The "RBJ" composition will also be performed at the concert on May 1st.

Thanks to being supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency that funds the Abington Cultural Council, the cost to attend the concert is affordable.

An acclaimed performance-based documentary about rising jazz pianist Jason Moran's 50th anniversary tribute to Thelonious Monk's historic 1959 Town Hall concert in New York City. The 97-minute film had its Boston premiere at the 2010 Roxbury International Film Festival and will be introduced by the festival's director, Lisa Simmons.

The Monte Carlo Jazz Ensemble plays jazz and hot dance musical arrangements following the model of exciting bands of the Roaring Twenties like the Dixie Syncopators, the Red Hot Peppers, and the Cotton Pickers. Four of Boston's most creative musicians, Dave Bryant, Tom Hall, John Kordalewski, and Neil Leonard, talk about current trends, which they demonstrate with live performances. An entertaining way to lose your fear of jazz.

Best known for his decade-long stint with Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band, keyboardist and composer Dave Bryant now teaches and performs in the Boston area, where he is a member of the faculty of the Longy School of Music. Since early 2009, he has been producing and performing in a monthly concert series at Outpost 186 in Cambridge. Recent guest artists have included renowned tabla master Badal Roy and guitarists Bern Nix and Kenny Wessel, all veterans of Prime Time.

According to Tom Hall, baritone and tenor saxophonist and music educator, "Life is one big improvisation." Hall is a co-founder of Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet (with Steve Adams, Allan Chase, and Cercie Miller), which recently celebrated its 31st anniversary with Reunion Concerts in Cambridge and New York City. In 1997 he developed a course on free improvisation for Brandeis University and has been teaching and directing the Brandeis Improvisation Collective ever since. He has also conducted master classes at New England Conservatory and at the Royal Conservatory and Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands.

Pianist and educator John Kordalewski is best known these days as the founder and leader of the Makanda Project, an ensemble of up to 12 veteran and younger musicians dedicated to continuing the legacy of Roxbury native son Makanda Ken McKintyre by playing compositions that Makanda never had the opportunity to record or perform in public. Kordalewski, who studied with Makanda and performed with him on several occasions, has written arrangements for the ensembles 9 horns (5 saxophones, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones), which are joined by piano, bass, and drums.

Widely recognized as an expert in music for multimedia, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Neil Leonard is a prolific composer, performer, writer, and innovator in computer music and sound design. He is currently a professor of Electronic Production and Design at Berklee College of Music, where he was honored with the award for the "most valuable contribution to the Music Technology Division." Leonard's new CD, "Marcel's Window," just became available online. He kicks off Jazz Week at CyberartsCentral at Atlantic Wharf on April 29 with Cyberpool, an evening of electro-acoustic improvised music by an 8-member ensemble.

Critically acclaimed New York saxophonist Daniel Bennett performs at Boston's world famous Liberty Hotel. Daniel Bennett has recently shared concert stages with national artists like Bill Frisell, Charlie Hunter, James Carter, Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood), Jerry Bergonzi, and David Fiuczynski. The Boston Herald described Daniel Bennett’s music as, “exploratory folk-jazz.” Bennett’s musical journey began as a graduate student at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. While at NEC, Bennett studied saxophone with Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone, and Ken Radnofsky.
Daniel Bennett graduated from the conservatory in 2004 and began performing as a freelance musician with groups like the Portland Symphony, New Hampshire Festival Orchestra, Musaner, and the Duprees. During this time, Bennett also began to compose songs that featured folk melodies played on the saxophone in a jazz quartet format. Bennett's chord progressions also maintained a unique minimalist quality, influenced by composers like Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The Boston Phoenix described Bennett's style as, "an unusual folk-minimalist approach." The music was innovative, yet remarkably accessible to a broad spectrum of listeners. By 2007, the Daniel Bennett Group had reached thousands of listeners throughout the northeast. The band’s landmark debut album, A Nation of Bears, was met with critical acclaim.
TheBoston Globe described Bennett’s music as “a mix of jazz, folk, and trance.” The Daniel Bennett Group released The Legend of Bear Thompson in the spring of 2008. Metronome Magazine ranked the album in their top five picks of the month, declaring, "the trio is so in sync with each other that it's downright mystical." In 2009, the Daniel Bennett Group released Live at the Theatre, a groundbreaking album that was recorded live during a double bill performance with the Charlie Hunter Trio. The Daniel Bennett Group has been featured on popular radio programs like Harvard University’s Jazz Spectrum (WHRB 95.3FM). The group has also made television appearances on Bandwidth TV, The Music Closet, Style Boston, and Sal's Show. Daniel Bennett’s quirky music has found a broad fan base that is unusual for a modern jazz outfit. Insite Magazine called Daniel Bennett’s music, “refreshingly capricious and trippy.” The Daniel Bennett Group can be heard at clubs and festivals throughout the United States.

The Jazz Swarms are a series of unamplified one-hour public performances in the 1st floor food court atrium of the Transportation Building at noontime Mon-Fri May 2-6 during JazzWeek 2011.

The series of free noon-time concerts each features a large-ish ensemble of a different instrument each of the five days- i.e. a Trombone Swarm, a Trumpet Swarm, a Saxophone Swarm, a Flute Swarm etc.

Each instrumental swarm is organized and led by a different prominent Boston jazz musician. The organizers and the musicians are all doing this on a pro bono basis to help raise the awareness of the great Boston jazz scene. And, of course, to have fun!

Evening II of a two-evening tribute on stage and screen to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Eric Jackson's show on 89.7 WGBH Radio, presented by JazzBoston and the Regent Theatre. Rarely seen videos of jazz greats s_elected by Jackson from the collection of jazz historian Hal Miller, owner of the world's largest collection of rare jazz film and video. Among Jackson's picks will be clips of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Sarah Vaughan, Herbie Hancock, Duke Ellington, Wes Montgomery, Pharoah Sanders, and Sonny Rollins. Miller will introduce the clips. A reception with Jackson and Miller will precede the screening.

Hal Miller, a music historian, jazz drummer, Latin percussionist, writer,and lifelong jazz fan, continues to spread the jazz gospel by sharing his prodigious collection of jazz concert and program videos. With some 14,000+ items, Hal possesses one of the largest private collections in the world. His experience with and understanding of jazz and jazz history make him ideally qualified to trace the history of this art form through his film and video collection, which he has largely devoted himself to doing for the past two decades. The Miller jazz video archives have often been used as a resource for television programs and school curricula in both the U.S. and Europe. Hal's collection is prominently represented in the Museum of Jazz History in Kansas City, and much of the live concert footage presented in the Ken Burns series "Jazz" was provided by Hal as well.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Leo Colon attended the Conservatorio Nacional de Santo Domingo and moved to Boston in 1995 where he studied jazz improvisation with Charlie Banacos, Jay Weik and Steve Neil. His award winning Latin Jazz music is both soothing and inspiring. Leo Colon started playing in 1985 and has blossomed into an incredible musician. D. R. Finch Music Foundation will present an hour of music and conversation beginning 12:30 pm at the Brighton Branch Library. Israeli bassist Tal Shalom-Kobi, American pianist Pamela Hines and Japanese drummer Miki Matsuki form an all female troika. The group will perform jazz standards and original compositions, creating a vibrant, blended sound with intimate piano-bass-drum arrangements. The trio will also discuss influential women in jazz as well as their approach to composing and performing music. Join us for this interactive gathering Mother’s Day weekend. SoWa, the South End's thriving Arts District, has teamed up with JazzBoston for the launch of the Thayer Street Outdoor Concert Series. Debuting Saturday, May 7th, from 4 to 6 PM in conjunction with Greater Boston's Jazz Week '11, the series will continue on the first Saturday of the month through October. The lineup will change monthly to feature various jazz ensembles based in and around Boston. The free concerts will be open to the public, with the goal of providing a special event for art and music enthusiasts to enjoy en route to their dinner destination.

The series kicks off with the widely acclaimed improvising jazz ensemble Your Neighborhood Saxophone Quartet, which recently held its 31st Anniversary Reunion Concert at the First Congregational Church in Harvard Square before taking it to The Stone in New York City. Founded in the 1980s and inspired by the then reigning World Saxophone Quartet, YNSQ went on to release six recordings and perform hundreds of concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe, including nine European tours, before dissolving in 1996. They returned for the kickoff concert of Jazz Week 2007, and are now solidly back on the scene with longtime members Allan Chase, Tom Hall, Cercie Miller, and Joel Springer. Their music has been described by The Phoenix's Jon Garelick as both adventurous and humorous, a winning combination.

Philip Russom is an amateur jazz pianist and singer, with a passion for the Great American Song Book. In this set, Russom will perform roughly a dozen of the 1500 songs Johnny Mercer wrote lyrics for. In addition, Russom will briefly explain the origin of each song, to help the audience understand Mercer's wonderful work as a lyricist, composer, singer, variety show host, and founder of Capitol Records.
